This thermometer is named after Galileo Galilei because he discovered the principle on which this thermometer is based—that the density of a liquid changes in proportion to its temperature. The seven- inch glass tube is full of water, each floating orb if filled with liquid of varying densities. The orbs rise and fall as the temperature of the water changes giving a surprisingly accurate read of the temperature.
